68 percent of Indians in Britain faced racism in office discrimination increased as population increased

London: A new report has found that 7 out of 10, or 68 percent, of ethnic minority employees, including Indians, have experienced discrimination in the UK’s financial services industry, which contributes heavily to the country’s GDP. The financial services sector will bring £173.6 billion to the UK economy in 2021, equivalent to 8.3 per cent of the country’s total economic output. According to the 2022 Race to Equality in UK Financial Services report by Reboot and Coleman Parkes, 82 per cent of people faced unfair comments in their organization based on their background in the past 12 months.

Nearly 47 percent of ethnic minority respondents raised issues with their HR on racism and discrimination, and three-quarters felt HR was not very effective in dealing with their issues. Some 52 percent of employees reported discrimination, felt they came under greater scrutiny by managers, and 48 percent reported being treated differently by coworkers for speaking up. 49 per cent of ‘discrimination’ respondents said they had to take time off from work, while 56 per cent said they had to seek counseling to help them overcome negativity at their workplace.

22 percent employees are uncomfortable talking
Nearly 22 percent of black employees felt “uncomfortable” talking about race in the workplace, and 60 percent said they wanted to be an advocate for their ethnic minority colleagues. Dimple Mistry, Co-Head of Race and Ethnicity at the Diversity Project, said, “Given my professional background, it is important for all HR professionals to come together, educate themselves, and create safe channels for employees to reach out to them and to raise the bar.” There is a call to action to take matters seriously.

The population of Indians has increased
The survey examined responses to 800 online interviews with ethnic minority (600) and white (200) employees at mid- to senior-level positions in financial services. Offering organizations a three-point plan in support of ethnic minority employees, the report says negative office cultures must be challenged, leaders must take charge and support the cause from the top.’ The report suggested that ethnicity data reporting should be more transparent, to close the ethnicity pay gap. The report comes in the backdrop of the recently released 2021 Census, which has shown the number of people of Indian origin to have risen from 2.5 per cent (14.12 lakh) in the 2011 Census to 3.1 per cent of the total population, the largest non-Indian population in the UK. White became the ethnic group.
