Cataract being the leading cause of blindness has become a major public health problem in India resulting not only in individual suffering but also in huge economic losses and social burden. A survey conducted by WHO and National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) shows that over 22 million people (equivalent to 12 million blind people) in the country are visually impaired, of which cataract accounts for 80.1% of the cases.

Ayurvedic ways to prevent cataract
Ayurveda, the holistic treatment system of ancient India, emphasizes healing and preserving health by balancing the body’s doshas – pitta, kapha and vata. Ayurveda states that any eye disease, such as cataract, arises from the imbalance of these doshas, ​​especially pitta dosha, which is responsible for the eyes and vision. According to Ayurvedic principles, cataracts can be controlled and prevented with the help of proper diet, improvements and lifestyle changes.

Keep the Vata dosha calm
Balancing the doshas is important in the Ayurvedic control of cataracts. Vata dosha in the eyes can cause dryness and degenerative changes when out of balance. Pitta dosha, which controls the body’s metabolism and transformation, can cause inflammation and vision problems when out of balance. Kapha dosha, which is associated with the structure and lubrication of the eyes, can cause cloudy vision and watery eyes and sometimes irritation or infection.

This includes consuming cooling foods such as cucumbers, melons and dairy products and preferring sweet, bitter and astringent tastes found in leafy greens, legumes, and grains such as barley and rice.

It is important to avoid spicy, sour and salty foods that can aggravate pitta. It is important to keep the body hydrated, so drinking plenty of water and eating hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables helps maintain eye moisture and overall health.

Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables

Foods rich in antioxidants, such as green leafy vegetables (spinach, bananas and fenugreek), fruits (berries, oranges and papayas), and herbs and spices (turmeric, coriander and saffron), can prevent oxidative stress, a major cause of cataract formation.

Inclusion of good fats like ghee is also beneficial and helps nourish and lubricate our eye tissues, including the eyes. Specific Ayurvedic foods and herbs include triphala, a mixture of three fruits (amadaki, bibhitaki, and haritaki) believed to be very useful in rejuvenating the body, and amla (Indian gooseberry), which is high in vitamin C and antioxidants, which is very beneficial for eye health. Turmeric is important in preventing inflammation in the body and helps manage inflammation especially related to pitta imbalance.
