59 people of Pune sick due to GBS, 12 on ventilator, bacteria coming out of stool, eat chicken-mutton properly


In the last few days, there has been a sudden increase in the number of patients suffering from similar diseases in the hospitals of Pune. According to Indian Express, Hindustan Times and other media reports, a total of 59 people have been admitted to hospital due to GBS. Out of which 12 patients are undergoing treatment on ventilator. The age of these patients ranges from children to 80 years old.

A report in Times of India revealed that three patients admitted to Poona hospital were paralyzed after stomach infection. Their high end PCR test was done and the test revealed Campylobacter jejuni bacteria from the stool. All three patients are part of an ongoing GBS outbreak, including one who is on a ventilator.

Dr. Sudhir Kothari, senior neurologist at Poona Hospital, told TOI that it is normal to see one or two patients of this disease in a month. But 26 patients in a week is a matter of concern and the reason should be investigated. However, some experts have expressed the possibility of dirty and infected water being the reason behind this. All the patients are living in the surrounding areas.
