18000 liters of fake oil seized, such oil causes cancer in stomach, FSSAI told how to identify poisonous oil in 10 seconds


News of adulteration in food items has become common in India. Almost all food items like milk, ghee, cheese, spices, oil, rice, sugar and pulses are being adulterated. Recently, cancer causing elements were detected in two big spice brands of India, due to which many countries banned them. After this, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the organization that monitors the quality of food items, has come into action.

Recently FSSAI has reported that 18,000 liters of fake edible oil has been seized in Rajasthan. The Medical and Health Department of Ajmer has seized this oil with fake labels of famous brands. Fake refined oil was being prepared by putting duplicate labels of famous brands and adulteration.

Fake edible oils are adulterated or counterfeit products that are made to look like real oils. These fake oils are often made by mixing cheaper oils with real oils or using harmful substances that are not edible. Adulteration usually involves mixing cheaper oils like palm or soybean with expensive oils like olive or avocado.

There are many other methods used to make fake oils. Sometimes artificial colours and flavours are used to hide low quality or adulterated oils. Some fraudulent methods involve reprocessing old, spoiled oils and deodorising them to remove the odour. This is done to hide their authenticity. These manipulations not only deceive the customers but also compromise the nutritional properties and safety of the genuine product.

Consuming fake cooking oil can be very harmful for health. These oils often contain harmful substances like trans fat. Trans fat increases the risk of heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes.

It is difficult to identify fake oils, but you can protect yourself by adopting some methods. First of all, you have to see what is the color, smell and taste of the oil. Real oil has a special color, smell and taste, if you find anything strange in these, then be careful. Chemical tests like fatty acid content and chromatography test are done to test the oil. These tests show whether the oil is adulterated or contains any non-edible substance. Real oils have a special identification, which can be detected by doing a lab test.

To spoil the quality of oil, chemical compounds like tri-ortho-cresyl-phosphate (TOCP) are used in it, which is lethal. FSSAI Told to check it like this-

  • Take 2ml oil in a container and add a piece of butter to it
  • If there is no adulteration in the oil, its color will not change
  • If it is adulterated then its color will change to red.
