1780 liters of oil seized, Diwali sweets were being made by heating them again and again, FSSAI warns – it can cause cancer


The demand for sweets and snacks increases during Diwali. In order to meet the demand and earn more profits, businessmen adulterate food items. Not only this, some things are made in fake manner and sold in the market.

It is reported that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted surprise inspections at several places in Coimbatore district. During this, they seized 1,780 liters of edible oil which was used several times to make sweets and snacks.

The team also seized 306 kg of sweets, in which more food color was used than expected. 1,780 liters of oil seized during inspection was handed over to the agencies involved in the Reused Cooking Oil (RUCO) project. Keep in mind that repeatedly using the oil after heating it once can cause many serious health problems.

FSSAI has stated that by repeatedly heating edible oil, total polar compounds (TPC) are formed in it. Because of this it becomes unfit for eating. Repeated heating has a significant impact on the nutritional and physico-chemical properties of cooking oil. Repeatedly using heated cooking oil can cause many serious health problems.

The government has made several rules to control the use of cooking oil in which the maximum limit of total polar compounds (TPC) in cooking oil has been set at 25 percent. The Indian public consumes approximately 23 million tonnes of cooking oil in a year. This is the reason why FSSAI keeps special monitoring on the use of oil.
