Lima. At least 13 people were killed in southeastern Peru on Monday in renewed protests demanding snap elections in some rural areas of the country. The people of these rural areas still owe allegiance to ousted President Pedro Castillo. Peru’s top human rights agency has called for an investigation into the deaths. Twelve of these people died during clashes between security forces and protesters trying to capture an airport in the city of Juliaca, near the border with Bolivia. Never before have more people died in the protests since early December following Castillo’s ouster and arrest.

According to reports, a minor was also among the 12 people who lost their lives in Juliaca. Another person died in the nearby city of Chuquito, where protesters blocked a highway. Castillo’s successor, Dina Boluaarten, has supported the plan to hold elections for president and Congress in 2024, which were originally scheduled for 2026. He has also supported a judicial inquiry into the use of excessive force by the security forces.
