In a first-of-its-kind initiative, 12 women from various self-help groups in rural Maharashtra were trained to operate and fly drones. The training was funded by them in collaboration with Mumbai-based startup DeFi Aerospace, which trained the women at its center in Bangalore. It aims to train women drone pilots who can facilitate work in various sectors including agriculture and infrastructure. These women will soon use their new skills to earn employment through field mapping, aerial surveying and agricultural spraying.

They all went through three levels of training: theory, simulator training and laboratory sessions. They are eligible for the ‘Drone Didi’ scheme of the state government, where they will get 80% subsidy on agricultural drones and loan for the remaining amount. A report by FPJ states that they can buy their drone and provide various services or can rent out their drone and earn through it.

In addition, they may perform property surveying, sprinkling, and mapping.
