In a major action, the Food Safety Department in Jaipur has seized 1000 liters of fake ghee from a factory. Here, fake ghee was being made and sold in the name of well-known brands like Saras and Lotus. Fake Desi Ghee was being made by mixing ghee essence in vegetable oil.

Fake ghee was packed in cartons bearing the name of government brand Saras and branded company Lotus. Batch numbers and series numbers were also printed on these cartons and wrappers so that customers mistook fake ghee for real. Consumption of fake ghee can cause many serious health problems.

Eating fake ghee increases the risk of heart attack, liver damage, indigestion and acidity, and increases the risk of miscarriage in women. Let us understand whether the ghee you are eating is real or fake, how can we identify it and what major damages can be caused to health by eating fake ghee.

How is fake ghee made?

  • Vegetable oil- The most common adulterant in fake ghee is vegetable oil. It is cheaper and looks like ghee.

  • Refined flour- Refined flour is added to ghee to thicken it.
  • Potatoes and sweet potatoes – they are ground and mixed with ghee.
  • Colour and Fragrance: Artificial colours and fragrances are added to ghee to make it attractive.
  • Coal Tar- Sometimes coal tar is also mixed in ghee.

FSSAI has told that fake ghee contains starch and you can easily test it at home. For this, you have to take a spoonful of ghee and put it in a transparent glass. Add one or two drops of iodine in it. If the ghee is adulterated, its color will change immediately.
